Dogs on Leads – Community Guidance
With the main summer holidays now over and families heading home, North Somercotes
Settles into a calmer early-autumn rhythm. Even so, our footpaths, beaches and village lanes remain popular with visitors – and with plenty of dogs still out enjoying the cooler weather.
Not every dog is confident around unfamiliar dogs, and not every owner can predict how their dog will react, especially when paths are narrow, visibility is limited, or even when you’re in a large open space. A friendly dog can still unintentionally cause worry, and a nervous dog may feel overwhelmed when approached by another off-lead dog.
Following a number of incidents. If your dog normally walks or plays off lead, please put them on a lead whenever you see another dog walker approaching or when you know your routes will cross. It’s a simple courtesy that helps prevent anxiety, misunderstandings and unnecessary tension between dogs and their owners. A little thoughtfulness keeps our village safe, calm and welcoming for residents, and visitors alike.
Legal Note (East Lindsey District Council)
Dogs must always be kept on leads when in public spaces. East Lindsey District Council enforces dog-on-lead requirements through Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO’s), https://www.e-lindsey.gov.uk/PSPO which allows authorised officers to instruct owners to put their dog on a lead in any public area. Failure to comply can result in a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £500.
